Festival of Lights One of the most popular festivals in India is the Festival of Lights, a five day Hindu celebration held in October or November. It is celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil. Its also a celebration of knowledge, prosperity, happiness, and joy. On the first day of the Festival of Lights, people roll up their window shades and turn on lights, to ward off evil spirits and to light the way for good luck to enter homes. Hindus also decorate their houses with such things as tinsel, flowers, toys, and paper lanterns called ”diyas,” which also represent the light of knowledge. Houses look beautiful after the long night of Diwali with their colorful decorations and twinkling lights. The second day of Diwali marks the start of the new year for the Hindu community. They visit their temples and pray for the wellbeing of their families and friends and the year ahead. A wide variety of rich foods are made to be distributed to family and friends. On the fourth day, people take part in fireworks displays that light up the sky with more than a million colors. Finally, on the fifth day, friends and family come together to praise all the gods and goddesses who have helped them through the past year. It is a time for celebrating success and sharing your joy with loved ones. As the Festival of Lights come to an end, families come together and share their joy and promise to have a better year ahead. Diwali has become a universal symbol of peace, unity, innocence and faith.
