Computer Vision Computer Vision is the science of teaching machines to “see,” to understand the contents of an image. Its a field of study within artificial intelligence, combining machine learning with image recognition, providing machines with the ability to understand images in the same way humans do. With the help of computer algorithms, a computer can detect a person on a photo, interpret an image of a street, or recognize an object in an image. Computer Vision is closely related to image processing and computer graphics. Computer Vision has been around since the beginning of artificial intelligence, but only recently has the technology been advanced enough to detect features in an image. This is due to a number of advancements in computing power and in machine learning algorithms. With the help of deep learning—a subset of machine learning—were now able to get machines to distinguish between different objects in an image with relative accuracy. Computer Vision is currently being used in a number of different areas. Its been used to create medical diagnoses from x-ray images, to power autonomous vehicles, and to detect unattended objects in public places. Computer Vision can also be used in things like facial recognition systems, object detection for surveillance purposes, and gesture recognition for human-machine interaction. With computer vision, machines can now be used to detect features in images that werent previously possible. The possibilities for this technology are endless, and the applications are becoming increasingly more valuable as the technology continues to progress.
