Lighting is an intrinsic part of our daily lives; from simply providing us with the ability to see, to carrying and creating a wide range of atmospheres for us at home and in the public domain. Lighting can be natural, such as the sun or the moon, or it can be man-made, most frequently through electricity. In cases of electricity-powered lighting, the rise of LED lights in recent years has seen greater longevity and efficiency than many of its predecessors. When it comes to atmosphere, lighting can be used to create warm, inviting, atmospheres, cozy spaces for relaxation, stimulating environments for children, or anything in between. Other components of lighting which are often overlooked are UV and infrared lighting. UV lights provide us with the ability to detect certain invisible dyes, for example, a UV inspected document may appear blank until a UV light is shone upon it and detects the hidden writing. Infrared, usually in the form of visible red light often used as 'night vision' to reveal objects otherwise invisible by the human eye. Ultimately, its clear to see that lighting is an essential part of our lives. Whether were looking at it naturally or artificially, from a practical or atmospheric standpoint – we cant deny its a force of life that provides us with benefits that reach much further than the ability to see.
