Lighting is an important part of the artificail environment we live in. Without it, our lifestyle and our work would be different. We also need lighting for safety in poorly lit places. Lighting has come a long way since it first started. Gas lighting was the first form of light and that in turn was replaced by electric lighting. The advances with electric lighting has been huge; from standard bulbs, to fluorescents, LEDs, and now we can mix and match the types of lights for the optimum effect. Lighting can set the mood for a room; it can be bright and cheerful or dim and calming. It can also be used to highlight certain areas of a room to draw the eye. Different rooms may require different lighting, such as a living room may benefit from warm yellow shades, while a workplace may benefit from more direct and brighter lighting. Lighting can also be used to create atmosphere. By adding dim colored lights to a room it can make it feel intimate and romantic. On the other hand adding delicate white lights to places such as outdoors can create an atmosphere of peace and serenity. Lighting is an important part of our lifestyle, from our homes, to our workplaces and even for safety in poorly lit areas. Without it, our lives would be completely different.
