Lighting is a necessity for human living. Without proper lighting, our daily life and work will be affected. Lighting can be divided into two types according to its purpose. The first one is functional lighting which is used to brighten up the area so that its inhabitants can perform their activities. This kind of lighting sheds lights directly onto objects like desks, machines and shelves. It can come from overhead fixtures or from artificial light sources such as lamps and LEDs. The second type of lighting is called accent lighting. It is used to embellish space and create atmosphere. This kind of lighting usually comes from wall wash fixtures, track lights, or uplights placed on objects to highlight their natural beauty. Apart from these two kinds, lighting is also divided into two categories based on its sources. Natural light is from the natural sources such as sunlight, while artificial light comes from man-made sources such as lamps and LED lights. Natural light is much more pleasant and reduces the need of energy consumption. However, artificial light is more practical and provides a greater basis for quality lighting designs. Finally, the importance of lighting to our lives shouldnt be overlooked, as it plays an important role in our safety, security and comfort. With the right kind of lighting, the proper balance between function, atmosphere and energy efficiency can be achieved.
